Entrepreneurs who left the corporate world to start businesses told Insider how they made the leap. They shared the financial steps they took, such as paying down debt and building an emergency fund. Ludomir Wanot, who quit a six-figure job at Amazon to build a real-estate-wholesaling business, took stock of his personal finances as he was preparing to leave corporate America. Steph Gordon and Den Mathu, a couple in Toronto, also considered their personal finances before quitting their corporate jobs to create online content full-time. You want to allow yourself as long a runway as possible to survive as an entrepreneur because, inevitably, you're going to make mistakes (and maybe costly ones).

But for Marks, winning the world title was the culmination of years of hard work, a goal that had formed in her mind even before she became the youngest surfer to qualify for the Championship Tour aged 15. But this year’s world title, Marks says, was even more satisfying after last season’s four-month absence from competitions. “The world title to me was my biggest goal ever,” says Marks, who won the Tahiti Pro event in August.

He quit his day job in March 2022 to build his personal finance brand, Defining Wealth, and coaching business full-time. The 30 year old shared his investment strategy, including the types of funds he invests in and why he prefers buy-and-hold real estate. Most of his stock-market money is invested in two types of funds, he told Insider: a broad US fund and a broad international fund. He started investing in real estate in 2018 in Orlando, Florida, where he lived at the time. What Wright likes about investing in real estate is that "you're buying an asset that's producing income," he said.

CNN —American surfer Caroline Marks won her first world title on Saturday, defeating Olympic champion and five-time world champion Carissa Moore. On her way to the World Surf League final, the 21-year-old defeated fellow American Caitlin Simmers and Australia’s Tyler Wright before taking on Moore in the gold-medal match. “There’s definitely going to be a massive party after this and everyone is invited!” Marks told the WSL afterwards. Sept 9 (Reuters) - American surfer Caroline Marks powered her way to her first world title on Saturday, while Brazil's Filipe Toledo went back-to-back to claim his second championship with a hard-fought win over surprise finalist Ethan Ewing from Australia. Toledo, however, showed once again his mastery of his adopted home break, combining his own searing turns with high-risk aerials to edge Ewing 2-0 and retain his title. Marks, already a five-year world tour veteran at 21, overcame Hawaii's five-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist Carissa Moore in the women's final. Everyone from Florida and from San Clemente has been supporting me, I just can't believe it," Marks said after her win. The win breaks the stranglehold that Moore, Wright and Australia's Steph Gilmore have had on the world title since 2007, and confirms Marks' place alongside Moore in the U.S. surfing team for the Paris Olympics in Tahiti next year.

Ahead of the contest, Australian Ethan Ewing experienced Teahupo'o's ferocity, fracturing two vertebrae during a warmup and putting the world No. 3 in doubt for the one-day Rip Curl WSL Finals in California next month to decide a world champion. The win gives Robinson the remaining spot at next month's Finals to go with his Olympic qualification secured earlier in the competition. Medina just missed out on both the Finals and the Brazil Olympic team. Simmers or Marks will qualify along with reigning world and Olympic champion Carissa Moore on Team USA depending on their final ranking after the Finals at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.
